ANDREA MYERS

Andrea Myers’s torn paper works are comprised of layers of paper saturated with inks and paint that are then torn by hand in sections, creating dense deposits of color in multi-dimensional work. As a graduate student, daily commutes on the subway repeatedly exposed Myers to views of posters covered with white paint in an attempt to conceal old advertisements, often peeling and torn off in areas, the white-washed papers displayed patches of color hidden underneath.  Intrigued by the time-worn element and beauty of the previously concealed layers, Andrea began experimenting in her studio to replicate this process.  The smooth and even negative space with that of ragged and irregular colorful tears creates an intriguing intersection of polarities and symbolic representation of frailty.  The work signifying secrets, intimacy disclosed over time, as we peel back the layers from the surface. The works nevertheless are light and joyful, depths of color playful peeking from underneath white space.

“I am interested in constructing pieces that emulate a weathering process, paralleling everyday subtle shifts like paint peeling or sidewalk cracks. The small fractures found in everyday life resonate the human presence within the larger landscape, suggesting a vulnerability that is akin to an ever-changing environment”.
