MATTHEW SHLIAN

Matt Shlian folds paper.  Archival paper and sometimes metallic foils.  Sounds simple, yet he creates stunning bas-relief sculptures. Shlian folds predominately by hand, but occasionally uses bone folders, blades, creasing tools, and Reverse Action Tweezers.  Informed by architecture, engineering, and Islamic design, the geometric compositions also fuse the concepts of origami with Kirigami (the Japanese technique of folding paper).  Early in his career, Shlian began taking apart pop-up books, disassembling them to see how they worked.  This curiosity evolved into investigation of how the brain anticipates repetitions and understands mirroring.  His sculptures have an inherent kinetic energy that engages the mind’s predisposition for pattern-seeking. Paper is transformed from a flat and one-dimensional medium into something 2-d that is intricate and complex. “It’s never just about the paper.  It is about light and form and structure.”  His portfolio extends from smaller works to large-scale installations while his paper prototypes have helped scientists with research in cancer and Alzheimer’s research as well as studies in nanotechnology.

“My interest in geometric form led me to paper – then paper led me to pop-up books… I begin with a system of folding and, at a particular moment, the material takes over.”
