SHARON BUTLER

Imagery inspired by everyday things – bleachers, HVAC units, taillights and bottles, Sharon Butler paints ordinary, even banal objects from life in a sparse and direct manner, leaving room for both interpretation and exploration.  Working on unstretched canvas, the paintings are permitted to float, fold, or do what they may.  Similarly, use of color is somewhat carefree and irreverent.  If it’s a pastel, it’s not too delicate, muddied even, and brighter colors while bold are not overtly vibrant. Nothing is pure or pristine. The beauty lies in the curiosities.  The wrinkle of the linen, the irregularly torn fabric that look like scraps, or even what Butler fondly calls “awkward color choices.”  These surface imperfections are fearlessly made in life-size scale of 6’ x 7’, inviting you to see them, flaws and all.  They are courageous and intimate.  When you take time to discover them, you will see their casually stoic and quotidian beauty.

“The additional grit and visual tangibility of the surfaces of these works is patent, expressive, assertive. The surfaces are telling you, quite frankly, that surfaces matter.”
