STEPHEN BATTLE

Stephen Battle’s work is informed by evolution, poetry, and philosophy, exploring transformation and change.  While some pieces are bold and floral, others are soft and monochromatic, yet each series is tied by telltale marks such as Twombly-like squiggles or dark circular forms.  Words are sometimes painted within, coded as shapes.  Stephen’s paintings have an expressive feeling, sometimes playful sometimes somber, but always immediate and with a reverence of the unknown.

“The dark colors can create an intimate exchange between the absorption and radiance of light, that for me, causes an affirmative, comforting feeling.”
