SUSAN HOSTETLER

As we look to the sky, we feel expectant, hopeful.  Inspired by flora and fauna, birds have been a consistent motif in Hostetler’s work.  The murmuration series focuses on the movement and flight patterns of migrations.  Creating large-scale installations of flocks, Hostetler creates multi-dimensional forms with three-dimensional clay birds and often even adds two-dimensional mylar silhouettes onto the wall, fusing two and three-dimensionality into her installations.  Hostetler began her work initially with bird drawings that included marks representing bird songs, primarily of graphite on paper.  After years exclusively drawing, she decided she wanted to make the birds more life-like, so began to make the birds into 3-d forms.  Shaping each piece individually by hand with a cellulous clay, the birds are lightweight and fitted to insert inches from the wall, allow for light and shadow play.  Each is wrapped in graphite drawing on mylar strips, incorporating the bird songs around the body.  Some birds have wings extended, others soaring with wings tucked in. Grouped in large or small formations, the birds can vary in colors and be used in both commercial or residential spaces.  The flocks capture no particular species, but the essence of all birds and the spirit of joy and flight.

“Inspired by the natural world, especially fauna and flora, the bird has been my steadfast motif. In my current work the focus is on the movement and patterns in murmurations of birds as well as the visual patterns in their songs.”
