JESSE HICKMAN

Using found objects, Jesse Hickman creates paintings that honor simplicity. Influenced by outsider art, he often begins with coffee filters or sunflower seed bags that are cut, primed, and drawn upon. Simple compositions and minimal shapes allow the focus to be on pure form and line. Charred stick charcoal, tar, house paint, and carbon paper also are incorporated into his paintings.  The works are an exercise in reductive restraint and an exaltation of the ordinary.

“I work in multiple styles and mediums, often with used and reclaimed materials, using their previous history and their inherent limitations as a guide to their new purpose and form.”
